Artificial Intelligence & Machine Learning Fundamentals · Day 1: Introduction to Artificial Intelligence

What AI Is, and What It Is Not

Welcome to Artificial Intelligence & Machine Learning Fundamentals. You do not need any coding, maths or AI background for this course. Every idea is explained in plain English first, with an everyday example, before any technical word appears. By Day 18 you will have built and presented a real AI project of your own.

Start With Your Phone

Think about the keyboard on your phone. As you type, it guesses the next word you want. Nobody sat down and wrote a rule for every possible sentence in every language people type in. Instead, the keyboard learned from millions of examples of how people actually write, and now it makes sensible guesses.

That ability, learning from examples and then making useful guesses about new situations, is the heart of what we call artificial intelligence.

Now compare it with a calculator. Press 2 + 2 and you get 4, every time. The calculator never learns anything. It only does exactly what it was told. That is ordinary software, and it is still extremely useful, but it is not AI.

The Technical Definition

Artificial intelligence (AI) is the area of computer science that builds systems able to do tasks that normally need human intelligence: recognising speech, understanding language, spotting patterns, making predictions and helping with decisions.

Notice the word tasks. Every AI system in use today is narrow AI: it is good at one kind of job. A face-unlock system cannot translate a letter. A translation app cannot drive a car. The idea of general AI (sometimes called AGI), a machine that could do any thinking task a person can, is a research goal. It does not exist yet, whatever headlines suggest.

What AI Does Well

What AI Does Badly, or Cannot Do

You Already Use AI Every Day

AI in Business

Businesses use AI for three broad reasons: to save time (automating routine work like sorting emails or reading invoices), to make better decisions (predicting which customers might leave, or which machine might fail), and to create new products (chat assistants, personalised recommendations). Throughout this course you will meet examples from retail, banking, mining, energy, agriculture, healthcare, government and more.

Bringing It Together

AI is software that learns patterns from examples so it can recognise, predict or generate things, rather than only following fixed rules. It is powerful but narrow, it can be wrong, and a human must stay responsible for important decisions. In the next lesson you will see where AI came from and exactly how it differs from the traditional software you already know.
